The importance of the playwright and poet Bertolt Brecht (1898-1956) in the renovation of the 20th century theatre is not alien to any theatre lover. However, the name of Caspar Neher: painter, set designer and librettist is not so well known to the general public.
In a period of time when the division between dramaturgy and staging was not clear (emphazised by the desire to explore theatre as a tool for social trasformation), the overlap between text, stage direction and scenic design is absolute.
There is no doubt about Bertolt Brecht genius, but it is also fair to say that next to him (not simply behind) there was another one: Caspar Neher.
